At Least 14 Killed By Lightning In Pakistán

At least 14 killed by lightning in Pakistan. At least 14 people were killed and three others injured by lightning that struck a mountain in northwestern Pakistan, local authorities said Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Torghar district of Jíber Pakhtunkhwa province, hit since Wednesday by torrential monsoon rains and landslides.

“At least 14 people from one family died after lightning struck two adjacent houses,” Kamran Bangash, a spokesman for the province, told AFP.

The dead included five children and four women, he said. Contacted by AFP, the office of the head of government of the province confirmed the balance.

The monsoon, which wreaks havoc from June to September, is essential for irrigating crops and filling the Indian subcontinent’s water reserves, but every year rainfall causes casualties and damage.
